In 1644 Edward Howell was given 40 acres of land just outside of the newly settled town of Southampton. His mission was to build a mill for settlers to grind their grain into meal. The Watermill soon became a landmark and travelers referred to going "East" or "West" of the Water mill as they crossed the South Fork of Long Island. By the 1800s the area was widely known as Water Mills, and later was officially renamed Watermill. It is famous for being the only town with both a functioning watermill and windmill. The historic shingled homes that line the streets South of the Highway create a splendid drive, walk, or bike ride to the magnificent ocean beaches. North of the highway one can feast their eyes upon luxurious rolling farm fields.
